Transgender Sustainability Programme

Transgender community is one of the most deprived communities in our society. NSVK started working with a group of transgender previously working as sex workers and were begging at signal. To ensure that they are self-sufficient and live their life with dignity, NSVK supported the group to start a small paper plate production business by training them and financing them with one machine for the production of the same.

The need:

The group took one step forward to become financially sustain by starting production of paper plate business and gave up their previous occupation of begging and Sex work. Like in any business it had its own challenges and the group were not able to earn sufficient income for survival and a need to improve & expand the business was felt.

Recently the transgender group got an opportunity in Hotel Taj in Mumbai to display their product for sale. It was a great opportunity and a wonderful experience.  

Socioeconomic Background:

- Transgender community have been always subjected to injustice in Indian society. They have been subjected to discrimination, suppressed and ignored.

- But there was a turning point when this community got recognition as a ‘third gender’ becoming victim of sexual harassment, molestation and trafficking. 

- This discrimination not only prevails outside the family but it is something that happens within the family also. The transgender persons have suffered discrimination at workplaces in the form of refusal to hire, harassment and privacy violation which resulted in unemployment and poverty in the Transgender community

Activity:

A group of 5 transgender members wants of start Achar/Pickle making business which is having a big market demand. The Varieties they wanted to prepare includes lemon pickle, chilly and garlic pickle, mango pickle, carrot pickle, mixed vegetable pickle, fish pickle, chicken pickle and so on.

Expected Outcome:

a.     Stop working as sex workers or begging near traffic signals.
b.     economically sustainable.
c.      Live a life with respect & dignity.
d.     Inspire other Transgender groups and become a role model.
e.     People will change their view towards Transgender community.

Impact:

By supporting this group they will get a chance to be financially self-sufficient without taking help from others. They can also live their life with dignity by creating their own identity.
