Umang Project
The need:
Ambojwadi is a slum in Malad (west), Mumbai. The project would cover the entire area of Ambojwadi, a ‘dark slum’ which constitutes a very huge population consisting of families from diverse community and religion.
The total population of the community would be more than 50,000 (approx) and the total population of the children between the age group of 6- 14 would be 15000 (approx).
The elderly children in this age group have high risk factors and tendencies towards indulgence in substance abuse, especially with growing rates of school drop outs, illiteracy and insensitivity of adults in the area towards the children & the importance of education. These adults play an influential factor on the children & thus these children lose their childhood.
Programme Rational:
The target group are children in the age group 6-14 years since they are vulnerable as both the parents and children are not aware of the importance of education and either do not go to school or drop out from school because of their social – economic condition. This program will benefit children who are in rag-picking, school drop-out and substance abuse child and overall the community as a whole.
Children are the future of the society and thus it is very vital to nurture the upbringing of the children which will help the future generations to groom great leaders as well as active citizens. NSVK as an organization wants to ensure these children enjoying their childhood and have a right to childhood.
Mission:
To enroll children in school and prevent children in the age group of 6-14 years involved in rag-picking, substance abuse and school drop-out through counselling and motivational sessions for behavioral change.
Programme Objective:
- Develop Physical and Mental health of children through workshops & counselling.
- Create awareness amongst the Children about Substance abuse.
- Educate children about other aspects and issues in the community.
- Sensitize Children and parents about the vulnerability of the children.
Implementation & Methodology and Project Activities:
Children in the project area are vulnerable to use of substance and drugs. NSVK field workers will interact with these children through different kinds of session like physical awareness, mental health, values, and life skills.
